The BLUF

The minimum eligibility is to serve 90 days of Total Active Duty Service.  For 100% entitlement you must have served 36 months of Total Active Service.  It includes financial support for housing, books and supplies ($1,000/year), and tuition (100% for in-state public institutions and about $24.4K for out of state or private).  

Private institution expenses can be supplemented if the school participates in the Yellow Ribbon Program.

You can use the benefit for other educational endeavors such as vocational training, flight training, or even entrepreneurship training.

If you are content with your own educational goals, at 6 years you can 'elect' to transfer your unused benefits to any listed dependent on your records.  Note you will incur a 4 year active duty service commitment.

While serving on AD the government helps cover your tuition!

Each service has its own criteria for eligibility, obligated service, and application process. 

TA is not a loan, most service rates are $250 per semester hour, $166 per quarter hour, and $4500 per fiscal year

Many universities offer excellent programs built to help fund your educational path as well as offer special programs only for current and past military members.  Some of the more well known programs are: the Yellow Ribbon Program, In-State Tuition Match, discounted tuition, scholarships, certificates, and entrepreneurial programs.
